Abstract:
An automated inventory of the names and locations of physical and cultural geographic features located throughout Idaho. 29594 locations are depicted as point features with the official name of the feature, the feature type, the county in which the feature is located, and the geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) locating the mouth of linear features and the approximate center of areal features.
Purpose:
To promote geographic feature name standardization and to serve as the Federal Government's repository of information regarding feature name spellings and applications for features in U.S. The names listed in the inventory can be published on Federal maps, charts, and in other documents. The feature locative information has been used in emergency preparedness, marketing, site-selection and analysis, genealogical and historical research, and transportation routing applications.
This SDE layer was developed for use in ArcIMS Image Map Services. A minimum number of attributes were retained to enhance preformance of the Internet application.

Attribute Accuracy Report: A random sample of 10% of the entries in the system were visually verified against the compilation source data (large-scale USGS topographic maps) to ensure an accuracy rate of at least 95%.

Logical Consistency Report: Locative references (geographic coordinates, topographic map, and county) are cross-checked for logical consistency at USGS.
Completeness Report: This dataset contains information about physical and cultural geographic features identified by a proper name, with the exception of most roads and highways.

Accuracy of these digital data is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. Comparision to the graphic source is used as control to assess digital positional accuracy.

Process Step:

Process Description:
Downloaded file "idaho.gz" from: http://geonames.usgs.gov/gnisftp.html

Imported the file to Access. Deleted all records that had "UNKNOWN" for the coordinate values. Original file has 29642 records. After deletion, file had 29628 records.

Exported records to text file with Latitude/Longitude and unique identifier.

Projected the file from Latitude/Longitude to IDTM (Arc Workstation 8.1 -- PROJECT command)

Generated a point coverage using GENERATE command

Joined attribute data to projected coverage in ArcView 3.2

Some points were outside the 1709 7.5' quadrangle outline for Idaho. Therefore, clipped the shapefile with a boundary coverage of the 1709 24k quadrangles for Idaho used the Geoprocessing Wizard in AV3.2.

Once clipping was complete, 29594 points remained.

Exported the data to an SDE database using the Export > Shapefile to Geodatabase option in ArcCatalog 8.1. All defaults were used.
